There is a scene that I sometimes play in my head, like the opening shot of a movie, when the headlines and the sadness I feel for the world casts a screen of darkness over reality. On this dark screen, I project a white porch attached to a little white house with blue shutters in New Orleans. Flowering vines fall from the eaves. The shot switches to first-person. I’m looking out over a quiet street, watching a neighbor emerge from their home, watching a cat who’s watching a bird, watching the blue light turn peach. I’m not thinking about much—just feeling still and content in my skin.
