Hi writer friend,
Today we’re celebrating one year of One More Question with a 30% discount on new subscriptions. 🎉 If you’ve been thinking about upgrading, now is a great time to do so. I’m launching forums later this week, so you’ll get in on those—plus all the other good stuff that’s included in a paid subscription. I’m here to help you keep writing, and by becoming a paid subscriber, you help me out, too! It’s pretty cool how that works. So, let’s do this?
March is nearly over and I just sent an invoice that gets me to my goal for the month. Two stories just came out that I’m proud of. That all feels really good. But now, once again, I’m staring at the vastness of a new calendar page that is pretty sparse in paid work.
I bet you know the feeling. It is so familiar with freelancing, and still, it briefly pushes me into that panic mode where I start thinking about bailing on journalism all together.
Instead I spent yesterday sending emails to people I’ve worked with in the past to ask if they have any writing work I can help with or any topics they’re looking to have covered. I followed up on pitches and started working on some new ones. And today I’ll be exploring many of the opportunities I’m listing right here. I know work will come through.
That’s all to say that even though I’m the one writing this newsletter, I need inspiration and motivation as much as anyone.
As freelance writers, we’re all doing work that is pretty unpredictable. Which is another reason why I started One More Question one year ago this week.
I wanted to create something writers could depend on for support, for the information they need to pitch editors and find work, and for the inspiration to keep putting ourselves out there, month after month after month.
So here is something I hope you find dependably useful—the 112th issue of One More Question! Let’s get to it…
Education, Funds, Inspiration, Etc.
This year’s Pulitzer Center Conference will focus on the environment and takes place online April 20-23.
Speaking of the environment, registration for Freeflow Institute’s seven-day journalistic exploration of the Green River’s Desolation Canyon closes on 4/1.
Time to start working on your application for the Science-Health-Environment Reporting fellowships. Applications are due May 10.
I’ve loved reading what you’re proud of having written this past year. If you haven’t shared yet, jump into the comments of this post!
Some simple yet brilliant advice on writing that everyone should read.
And a tweet that made my heart flutter.
Editors Who Want Your Pitches
That’s all for today friends. I’ll see you later this week!
Stay inspired,
